EDUCATION STRIKE HITS SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES THROUGHOUT MALAGA

A strike in the education sector in Malaga has had a wide response among students and teachers. The strike action was called to protest against a new law which opponents claim is an attack on public education. Throughout the province many classes in universities and secondary schools were empty, although the effect was minimal in nursery schools. In Casares it was estimated that 87 per cent of the students and 26 per cent of the teachers did not turn up at the Blas Infante school. In Los Almendros 75 per cent of the students and 50 per cent of the students stayed away. In the Las Vinas school in Manilva 95 per cent of the students and 15 per cent of the teachers took part in the action. Felix Martin of the teachers union in Malaga claimed that 50 per cent of teachers and over 90 per cent of students in the secondary school sector took part in the strike.
