MAJOR DOCUMENTARY ON THE CIVIL WAR TIO BE SCREENED IN CASARES THIS EVENING

An important documentary on the Spanish Civil War and its effects on a local village will be screened in Casares tonight. The documentary is about the destruction by Franco’s forces of the village of La Sauceda in the natural park of Los Alcornocales and the fate of its 2,000 inhabitants. The documentary film, “La Sauceda - from Utopia to Horror”, will be screened at five o’clock this evening at the Casa de la Cultura. The village was the last republican stronghold in the area and it was attacked  by four columns of Franco’s army. After the village was destroyed, the survivors were locked in a  farmhouse and every day five or six people were taken from there and executed. The screening will be followed by a presentation from the book “A valley of beauty and pain, the tragedy of Sauceda” by Luis Garcia Bravo. The event is being organised by the Department of Culture with the help of local historian, Benito Trujillano.
